A note on recommendations
Calligraphy tools are a deeply personal choice, and what works for one person may not suit another. The information below is intended to help you understand what different tools do and what to consider when choosing — not to prescribe specific brands. We do not sell tools, and we receive no compensation for mentioning any product. Where we name specific items, we do so because they are widely available in Canada and commonly referenced in calligraphic education.
Nibs
Calligraphy nibs fall into two broad categories: broad-edge (flat, chisel-shaped) and pointed (flexible, fine-tipped). The type of nib determines which scripts you can write, and the two types require fundamentally different techniques.
Broad-edge nibs create thick and thin strokes through the angle at which the flat edge meets the writing line. You do not press harder or softer — the contrast arises naturally from the geometry of the nib. These are used for Foundational Hand, Italic, Uncial, Carolingian, and Gothic scripts. They come in metal (most common for dip pens) and felt-tip marker form (convenient for early practice, though less precise). Common metal nib brands include Mitchell, Brause, and Speedball, each with slightly different characteristics in terms of ink flow and flexibility.
Pointed nibs are used for Copperplate, Spencerian, and other pressure-based scripts. Here, line width varies according to how firmly you press: light pressure for hairlines, increased pressure for swells. This requires a flexible nib and a technique quite different from broad-edge work. Popular pointed nibs include the Nikko G (sturdy, forgiving, widely recommended for beginners), the Hunt 101 (more flexible, suited to experienced hands), and the Gillott 303 (very fine, responsive, but demanding).
One practical detail often overlooked: new metal nibs come with a thin coating of machine oil or lacquer to prevent rusting in storage. This coating repels ink and must be removed before first use. The simplest method is to pass the nib briefly through a flame and wipe it, or to clean it with a cotton pad dipped in rubbing alcohol. Some calligraphers simply push the new nib into a raw potato for fifteen minutes — the starch removes the oil effectively.

Ink
For practice, almost any black ink formulated for dip pens will work. The key properties to look for are opacity (the ink should produce solid, dark lines), flow (it should move smoothly from nib to paper without excessive pooling), and drying time (fast enough to prevent smudging, but not so fast that it dries on the nib mid-stroke).
Avoid India ink designed for technical drawing pens (such as Rotring or Staedtler technical inks) — these contain shellac, which dries into a waterproof, plastic-like film that can permanently clog calligraphy nibs. Sumi ink, a Japanese stick ink traditionally ground on a suzuri stone with water, is widely recommended for its exceptional flow, rich blackness, and nib-friendly composition. Bottled liquid sumi ink is available as a convenient alternative to the traditional grinding process.
Walnut ink produces warm, sepia-toned lines and is popular for practice because it is inexpensive and pleasant to work with. Iron gall ink — the historical ink of medieval scriptoria — oxidizes from pale grey to deep blue-black over several hours, offering a fascinating connection to the tradition you are studying. Gouache (an opaque watercolour) diluted with water to ink-like consistency opens up a full spectrum of colours, though getting the viscosity right takes some experimentation.
For pointed-pen work, ink viscosity matters considerably more than for broad-edge. Thinner inks flow better from flexible nibs, while overly thick inks resist the tine-spreading motion needed for swells. Many Copperplate practitioners dilute their inks slightly with distilled water, adding a drop of gum arabic to maintain opacity. Dedicated pointed-pen formulations such as McCaffery's or Blot walnut-iron inks are designed specifically for this purpose.
Beginner suggestion
Start with a single bottle of good-quality black ink. Sumi ink (in liquid form) or Higgins Eternal are commonly available in Canada through art supply retailers and work well with broad-edge nibs. You can explore colours and alternative formulations later, once you are comfortable with basic strokes and letterforms.
Inks to avoid for calligraphy
- Technical drawing inks (shellac-based)
- Fountain pen inks (too thin for dip pens)
- Acrylic inks (dry waterproof, damage nibs)
The reservoir question
Some broad-edge nibs (especially Mitchell roundhand nibs) come with a small metal reservoir that clips onto the underside of the nib. This holds ink against the writing surface, allowing you to write for longer between dips. Not all calligraphers use them — some prefer dipping more frequently for better control. Either approach is legitimate. Pointed nibs typically have no reservoir; ink sits in the concave trough of the nib itself.
Paper
Paper quality matters more than most beginners expect, and using the wrong paper is one of the most common sources of early frustration. Ordinary printer paper (typically 80gsm, uncoated) absorbs ink unevenly, causing feathering — fuzzy, jagged edges on every stroke — and often allows bleed-through to the reverse side. The result looks poor regardless of the calligrapher's technique, which can be discouraging.
For practice, look for paper with a smooth, slightly coated surface. Layout paper (also called marker paper or bleedproof paper) is excellent: it is translucent enough to place over guide sheets, smooth enough for clean strokes, and available in affordable pads. Rhodia dot-grid pads (the No. 18 or No. 19 sizes) are another popular choice among calligraphers, offering a smooth, fountain-pen-friendly surface that also works well with dip pens.
For finished pieces or more substantial practice sessions, many calligraphers turn to hot-pressed watercolour paper (the "hot-pressed" designation indicates a smooth surface, as opposed to "cold-pressed" which is textured). Canson Mi-Teintes provides a smooth, toned surface available in many colours. Specialty calligraphy paper from manufacturers like Zerkall or Fabriano offers particularly refined surfaces, though at a higher price point more suited to finished work than daily practice.
Lined guide sheets placed beneath translucent practice paper can save considerable time. Rather than ruling every sheet by hand with pencil and ruler, you prepare one master guide sheet with carefully drawn lines at the correct x-height, ascender, and descender heights for your chosen nib width, then place it beneath your practice paper. The lines show through clearly enough to write along, but do not appear in your finished practice sheets.
The feathering test
To test whether a paper will work for calligraphy before committing to a full pad, draw a thin line with your dip pen and look closely at the edges. If the ink bleeds outward in tiny branches (feathering), the paper is too absorbent for clean calligraphic work. If the line is sharp and clean with distinct edges, the surface is suitable.
Also check for show-through: turn the paper over. If the ink is clearly visible on the reverse side, consider using a heavier weight or a different coating. For daily practice this matters less, but for finished work it is essential.
Paper weight explained
Paper weight is measured in grams per square metre (gsm). Standard printer paper is 80gsm. Layout paper for practice is typically 45–70gsm (thin but coated). Finished-work paper ranges from 120gsm to 300gsm+. Heavier does not automatically mean better for calligraphy — surface smoothness and coating matter more than thickness.
Pen Holders
For broad-edge calligraphy, pen holders are straightforward: a simple wooden or plastic straight holder with a friction-fit insert works well. Mitchell, Speedball, and Tachikawa all produce inexpensive holders that accept standard broad-edge nibs. The grip should feel comfortable — neither too thin (which causes cramping) nor too thick (which reduces control). Some calligraphers wrap their holders with masking tape or rubber grip tubes to customise the diameter.
For pointed-pen calligraphy, the choice between a straight holder and an oblique holder is more significant. A straight holder works well for writing at a slant, but an oblique holder — which positions the nib at an angle relative to the shaft — makes it considerably easier to achieve the steep slant (approximately 55 degrees from the baseline) characteristic of Copperplate. Oblique holders come in simple plastic models and elaborate turned-wood versions. For a beginning Copperplate student, an inexpensive oblique holder with a brass flange is sufficient.
One underappreciated factor is flange fit. The metal flange on an oblique holder must grip the nib firmly without bending it. A flange that is too loose allows the nib to rotate during writing, ruining stroke consistency. A flange that is too tight can damage delicate pointed nibs. Many calligraphers learn to adjust the flange curvature themselves using small pliers, but this is a learned skill. If you find your nib spinning in the flange, consider a holder with an adjustable screw mechanism instead.
Practice Surfaces & Workspace
A flat table works for calligraphy, but a slightly angled writing surface — tilted 30 to 45 degrees from horizontal — offers meaningful advantages. The angle brings the paper closer to your line of sight (reducing parallax distortion), allows ink to flow downward into the nib's contact point with the paper, and encourages a more upright posture that reduces neck and shoulder strain during extended practice sessions.
You do not need a purpose-built drafting table. A large clipboard propped on a stack of books, a drawing board leaning against the edge of a table, or a lap desk all serve the purpose. Some calligraphers use an old door leaf across two trestles, angled with a block of wood at the back. The specifics matter less than the principle: a gentle slope, a stable surface, and a working area large enough that your arm can move freely.
Beneath your writing paper, tape down several sheets of scrap paper or a thin felt pad. This creates a slightly cushioned surface that helps the nib engage with the paper more evenly, particularly for pointed-pen work where pressure variation is central to the technique. A hard, unyielding surface beneath thin paper can cause the nib to skip or scratch.
Starter workspace checklist

First purchase suggestions
If you are starting with the Foundational Hand learning path and need to purchase supplies, here is what we suggest. Total outlay is typically under forty Canadian dollars.
One broad-edge nib
A 3mm or 3.5mm width. Mitchell roundhand nibs are the traditional standard and widely available at Canadian art suppliers. A single nib is enough to begin — you can acquire additional widths later as your interests develop.
A straight pen holder
Any inexpensive wooden or plastic holder that accepts your chosen nib. Speedball and Tachikawa both make reliable, affordable options. Ergonomic grip shape is a personal preference — try what is available and adjust from there.
One bottle of black ink
Liquid sumi ink or Higgins Eternal are widely stocked at art supply retailers in Canada and pair well with broad-edge nibs. A single 60ml bottle will last several months of regular practice.
A pad of layout paper
A3 or A4 size, 50gsm or heavier. Also called marker paper or bleedproof paper. Translucent enough for guide sheets, smooth enough for clean strokes. Canson, Daler-Rowney, and Winsor & Newton all produce suitable options.
A ruler, pencil, and eraser
For creating your first guide sheet. You will need to rule lines at specific intervals based on your nib width — our Foundational Hand learning path explains the measurements in detail. A hard pencil (2H or 4H) makes fine, easily erased guidelines. A clear plastic ruler with metric markings is ideal for the millimetre-precise measurements that calligraphic ruling demands.
Care & Maintenance
Calligraphy nibs are made of steel and will rust if left wet. After each practice session, rinse your nib in clean water, wipe it dry with a soft cloth, and store it in a dry place. Dried ink left on a nib clogs the tines and disrupts ink flow. If ink has dried, soak the nib in warm water for a few minutes, then gently clean it with an old toothbrush.
Nibs wear out. A broad-edge nib that has seen many hours of use will gradually develop a rounded edge that no longer produces sharp, clean strokes. This is normal and not a reflection of poor technique. Replace nibs as needed — they are inexpensive consumables, not permanent tools. Many calligraphers keep a small stock of their preferred nib sizes.
Ink bottles should be stored upright, tightly capped, and away from direct sunlight. Sumi ink and walnut ink can develop mould if contaminated with water or organic matter from dirty nibs — avoid dipping a nib back into the bottle after it has been in your mouth (a surprisingly common habit). Instead, use a small separate container to hold your working ink supply, and pour only what you need from the main bottle.
Practice paper can be recycled, but finished calligraphic work on good paper benefits from flat storage between acid-free interleaving sheets. Ink fades over centuries — even iron gall ink, despite its reputation for permanence — so keep finished pieces out of direct sunlight if you intend to preserve them.
